LG Electronics, the South Korean tech giant, is reportedly developed a new biometric ignition system that allows drivers to start their vehicle’s ignition with touchless facial expressions or finger movements. The biometric authentication system uses multiple in-car cameras to identify the user’s specific body parts.
The new automobile technology will enable drivers to start the car without using a key. In-built cameras will recognize their facial expressions to start the vehicle as opposed to car keys. The company had applied for a patent for its “biometric authentication method and device using multiple cameras in a car” in 2019 and the patent was published recently.
The cars will be using a customized and personalized facial recognition system. Authorized users can tailor it to their specific environment such as the preferred driver’s seat position, speed, cabin temperature, audio volume, etc. can be automatically attuned to their tastes and preferences. The new technology permits drivers to regulate diverse features of the in-car experience without diverting their attention from the road.
The technology also assures the utmost safety of the drivers and passengers. Cameras can detect signs of drowsiness or distractions. The multi-camera biometric authentication system can also detect the movements of objects. It spots obstacles on the road ahead and can prevent a possible collision by adjusting speed and by suggesting lane changes.
Synchronous functioning of multiple cameras records the body and iris movements of the driver and informs about adjustments. It registers other biometric characteristics and helps authorized drivers to make the adjustments through hand and facial gestures.
The cars will come equipped with a foldable infotainment display panel as reported by TechRadar.
