The Roland AeroCaster VRC-01 is the company’s most recent hardware product in the Pro AV category, with an emphasis on streamers and creators ever since it made inroads in the same. The small video-switching console is nearly wireless, allowing for a multi-source video configuration utilizing just phones and laptops through WiFi or cellular.
To run the primary mixing software, you’ll need to connect the AeroCaster to an iPad, but all of the other video inputs are wireless through Roland’s proprietary AeroCaster Camera mobile app or laptop users may remote screen share using Chrome. In short, if you’ve ever wanted to produce a multi-camera podcast or music video but don’t want to deal with the hassle of many specialized cameras, AeroCaster will allow you to accomplish it using phones you already own.
Roland’s V-series of Pro AV video switchers and mixers has earned them some impressive accolades in this market. The VRC-01 looks to be a more consumer-friendly version, aimed towards Twitchers and YouTubers (though you can also stream to Facebook Live or any RTMP channel too). You can swap cameras and mix audio in real-time from the console. There are two combination XLR inputs for professional microphones or TRS/phone input, as well as some basic audio effects like reverb and lip-sync delay.
Much of the abovementioned capability was previously available through Roland’s higher-end gear and the AeroCaster Switcher software, but the VRC-01 and its accompanying iPad app appear to be more simplified and accessible.
The VRC-O1 will be on sale in March for $295.
