WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps, especially among Android users. However, a persistent issue has been the inability to make calls directly from the app without saving contact numbers to the address book first. Select beta testers will now be able to utilize an in-app dialer that WhatsApp is rolling out to improve user experience and expand the app’s functionality.

According to a recent update from WABetaInfo, some users, with the new feature, will have access to a floating call action button within the Calls tab. This new feature allows users to dial numbers that aren’t saved in their contacts directly through the app. Additionally, users can choose to save the unsaved number as a new contact or add it to an existing contact card. Alternatively, users have the option to send a message instead of making a call right after dialing the number — a messaging shortcut has been incorporated into the in-app dialer screen for this purpose. Currently, this feature will have a limited rollout and is exclusively available to selected beta testers who have updated to version 2.24.13.17.

Unlike apps like FaceTime, which allow users to start calls by entering a name, email address, or contact number, WhatsApp currently requires its users to either save numbers manually to their address book or open a chat with the contact to begin a call. This process not only consumed time and effort but also raised security issues. Storing numbers in the address book meant that these contacts could access the user’s last seen status, profile picture, and other personal details, depending on the user’s WhatsApp profile visibility settings. This update brings added convenience and privacy to WhatsApp users’ calling experience. Moreover, it helps in keeping your address book organized and free from unnecessary clutter.

WhatsApp is now testing a ton of new features, this being just one of them. For example, a redesigned preview feature for WhatsApp’s status updates was made available to select beta testers in version 2.24.12.2. With this upgrade, users can view status updates in a horizontal style without having to open them. Embrace the future of calling convenience and privacy with WhatsApp’s latest in-app dialer, designed to streamline your communication experience!
