Instagram has rolled out several new messaging features including the ability to share music previews in DMs, send a message silently, see who’s online to chat with, reply to messages while you browse your feed, and more. The roll-out is following the announcement by the Meta-owned photo-sharing platform that the company will be making more investments in messaging to help you connect with friends easily. This upgrade follows Instagram’s recent launch of chronological feed options, Favorites and Following, that allow users to view posts ranked without algorithms.
The recent updates in messages include the following:
· Reply while browsing: You can now reply without going to your inbox and losing your browsing feed.
· Quick share option: By tapping and holding the share button, you can now easily reshare posts.
· Check who’s online: At the top of your inbox, you can now see who’s free to chat with at the moment.
· Play, pause and re-play: You can now share a 30-second preview of a song and the recipient can listen to it directly from the chat window.
· Send messages quietly: Send messages without notifying friends by adding “@silent” in your message.
· Lo-fi chat theme: Try the new lo-fi chat theme to make your conversations feel more personal.
· Polls in a group chat: Similar to Messenger, now you can create a poll directly in your group chat on Instagram.
At the moment, these new features are available only in select countries but will expand globally in time. Some of these new features need users to upgrade to Instagram’s upgraded messaging experience which was first introduced in the fall of 2020.
