The Meta-owned instant messaging application WhatsApp, has long relied on phone numbers as the only identity for accounts. Users require a phone number to create an account. Anyone in an individual or a group chat will be able to see your phone number. This can undergo a change with the onset of the new username feature.WhatsApp recently introduced a new reply bar feature to quickly reply to images, videos, and GIFs.
Now as per the reports, WhatsApp is making an attempt to enable users to configure their usernames. It will soon be possible to choose your WhatsApp username right within your profile settings as a new section dedicated to this feature will be introduced on this screen in the future. WhatsApp usernames can contain alphanumeric characters and some special characters, however, discriminators are not supported. Establishing a username is quite optional, as the phone number linked with an account that started a chat through a username will always remain hidden. Users will find it simpler to connect with a wide variety of contacts by using WhatsApp’s username feature, which makes it easy to engage with any user, whether they are an individual or a business.
By enabling users to connect without disclosing their phone numbers, the addition of a username feature is poised to enhance user privacy and security. Users can now communicate with new people and participate in group conversations while yet maintaining a higher level of informational confidentiality. Conversations started using usernames will always be encrypted from beginning to end. A future update to the app will include the feature to configure a WhatsApp username, which is currently under development.
