WhatsApp Channels, the broadcasting feature allowing organizations and public figures to share updates, is set to receive new tools. Channels will include a polling feature, voice notes, and the ability to share updates to Status. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO, announced these features on his WhatsApp Channel, demonstrating the polling function. WhatsApp channel which was introduced last year is serving as one- way broadcasting tool that facilitates regular updates from sports teams, organizations, and public figures to enhance engagement on the Meta-owned messaging platform.
The latest updates aim to boost engagement on Channels by providing admins the ability to conduct polls among members. While polls have been a feature in regular and group WhatsApp chats, Channel admins can now use them for more interactive member involvement. Furthermore, admins can send updates in the form of voice notes, fostering a direct and personal connection with the audience. Another addition is the ability to share WhatsApp Channel updates on Status; users can do so by long-pressing the desired update, selecting ‘Forward,’ and then choosing ‘My Status.’ Additionally, the updates introduce the option to assign multiple admins to a specific Channel.
Channels, initially designed as a one-way communication tool, has seen updates post-launch focused on enhancing engagement and interactivity. A beta update in November 2023 allowed Channel admins to share Stickers. During the same period, the platform began testing the capability to share polls within Channels. Introduced in June of the previous year, WhatsApp Channels was described by Meta as a “simple, reliable, and private way to receive important updates.” After the initial launch, the broadcasting tool expanded to 150 countries, including India, featuring support for directory search and reactions.
Channels have swiftly gained popularity since its introduction. WhatsApp, with over 2 billion global users, has seen Channels crossed more than 500 million monthly active users within the initial seven weeks. This information was conveyed by Zuckerberg in his WhatsApp channel last year.
