Businesses can now begin integrating Google’s most recent generative AI video model, Veo, into their content production processes. Veo was first revealed in May, three months after OpenAI demoed its product, Sora. Now, Veo has launched in a private preview on Google’s Vertex AI platform, reaching the market before Sora.
Veo can create high-quality 1080p videos using text or image prompts in various styles. When it was first introduced, the generated videos were about a minute long, but Google hasn’t mentioned any length limits for the preview version. Some new sample videos shared by Google are similar to what we’ve seen before from Veo. In fact, it’s hard to tell if these videos are made by AI.
Beginning next week, all Google Cloud customers will have access to the most recent version of Google’s Imagen 3 text-to-image generator via Vertex. This can be considered an extension of its August release on Google’s AI Test Kitchen in the United States. Those on Google’s allow list may also access new capabilities including prompt-based photo editing and the option to “infuse your own brand, style, logo, subject or product features” into generated images.
Veo and Imagen 3, according to Google, have predefined safeguards against producing destructive content or violating copyright. Both Veo and Imagen 3 also include DeepMind’s SynthID technology, an invisible digital watermark that helps reduce concerns about misinformation and misattribution.
With Google’s video model now in use, OpenAI is well behind its rivals and is running out of time to fulfill its goal of releasing Sora by the end of 2024. AI-generated content is already showing up in advertisements. Businesses also have an incentive to avoid waiting for Sora, as 86 percent of businesses that use generative AI report more income.
