Google’s I/O event was packed with many new updates, all focused on AI. During the event, the company revealed that Google Search would also be getting an AI boost. This involves AI-generated overviews appearing above search results. Google launched the AI overview feature to the public last week.
Now, it has been announced that the feature will have ads in it. Google revealed during the Marketing Live Event held on May 21 that AI overviews in search will contain in-line ads soon.
These advertisements, which display products associated with your search query, will have a clear “Sponsored” disclaimer. The example provided by Google for the query “How do I get wrinkles out of clothes?” displays suggestions and product links for wrinkle remover products.
Google states “In early testing, we’ve heard that people find the ads appearing above and below the AI-generated overview helpful. Soon, we’ll start testing Search and Shopping ads in AI Overviews for users in the U.S. They will have the opportunity to appear within the AI Overview in a section clearly labeled as “sponsored” when they’re relevant to both the query and the information in the AI Overview”.
Google claims that it will “continue to test and evolve the Search experience” and “remain focused on sending valuable traffic to publishers and creators” in a recent blog post while describing how the ads will work within the feature. However, it has to be noted that the company’s demo doesn’t display any links to the web until you scroll down the page.
“Ads from existing Search, Performance Max, and Standard Shopping campaigns have the opportunity to appear within the AI Overview. As we move forward, we’ll continue to test and learn new formats, getting feedback from advertisers and the industry,” the blog concludes.
The company has not announced a specific date for when the ads will be rolling out.
