Google I/O just ended, giving us a slew of new AI-related updates in store for Google. Here’s everything you need to know about the annual developer conference.
Project Astra
Deepmind CEO Demis Hassabis took to the stage to tease a preview of Project Astra, the company’s upcoming “universal AI agent for everyday life.”
Speaking of Astra, Demis talked about how difficult it can be to grasp context more effectively by using appropriate conversational nuances and intonations. He remarks that interacting with Astra feels more “natural” in terms of both pace and quality.
In the subsequent video demonstration, the Astra responds to code-related queries on a computer screen and uses a phone camera to identify objects. Aside from objects and code fragments, the agent could also determine your location by observing the surrounding area.
You can also ask Astra to find your misplaced glasses, for instance, and it will analyze where it last saw the misplaced item and use that information to locate it. The project creates an event timeline by combining speech and video input, which facilitates effective information recall.
You can search on Google Lens by recording a video
Apart from image searches, you can now record a video of something you want to look up and ask a question during the video, and Google’s artificial intelligence will try to find relevant web results.
Gemini will help you find photos
Ask Photos” allows Gemini to search through your Google Photos collection to find answers to your queries. The update is very advanced and can pull up even obscure things like license plate numbers.
Veo and Imagen 3
Veo and Imagen 3 are Google’s new AI-powered media creation engines. Veo is Google’s answer to OpenAI’s Sora. It can create “high-quality” 1080p videos that are “beyond a minute” long and can comprehend timelapse and other cinematic concepts.
Imagen 3, a text-to-image generator, handles text with an “incredible level of detail” for “photorealistic, lifelike images” and fewer artifacts. The outcome is the company’s highest-quality text-to-image model.
Major updates to Google Search
AI-generated responses will now appear above search results in Google Search. The company reports that by the end of the year, over a billion people will have access to this feature globally.
Besides these 5 major upgrades, Google has also introduced Gemini to Android, AI-powered scam detection, and SynthID AI watermarking.
