Google made a significant announcement at the Google I/O 2023 event, showcasing their emphasis on generative AI and large language models. One of the highlights of the event was the official confirmation that large language models (LLMs) would be integrated into Google Search. The company demonstrated the functionality and stated that it would be available in the near future.

However, to our surprise, “soon” arrived much earlier than anticipated. Now residents of the United States have the option to participate in the Google Search Labs and opt-in to experience Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE). This groundbreaking feature allows users to explore a novel approach to conducting searches on Google.

 How Does Google SGE Work?

To gain a comprehensive understanding of Google SGE, revisit the Google I/O 2023 keynote for a complete demonstration. In essence, when utilizing Google Search to explore specific topics, you will encounter a fresh interface that invites you on a captivating “search journey.” This new experience allows you to engage with Search using natural language, enabling you to pose more intricate queries.

In simpler terms, instead of conducting a search like “best e-bike,” you now have the freedom to search for something like “best e-bike in red suitable for mostly flat surfaces and available at an affordable price.” The upgraded Search, fueled by powerful language models, understands intricate queries and delivers customized results that cater to your specific requirements. Furthermore, you can continue the conversation by posing follow-up questions as if you were 


While Google SGE introduces an exciting way to search, it’s important to note that it may not cover all types of queries. Google explicitly mentioned that certain topics, such as medical questions, will not trigger the SGE functionality. Instead, such queries will continue to be handled by the traditional Google Search engine.

To experience SGE firsthand, you will need to actively opt-in to Search Labs and be located within the United States.
