Bluesky is a social media platform that shot to popularity over the past few weeks. Now, it stands as a formidable competitor to Elon Musk’s X and Meta’s Threads.
The data from Similarweb shows that Bluesky’s daily active users have increased to 3.5 million, a 300 percent rise since November 5th, the US Election Day, as reported by Financial Times. This puts the platform only 1.5 times behind Threads, which had 5 times more active users earlier this month.
In November 2024, Bluesky’s user base exceeded 20 million. The reason for this growth is being attributed to the many policy changes at X, including a highly criticized update to the block feature and authorizing third-party companies to train their AI on user posts, which are being reported as the reason the platform saw a mass exodus of users.
Now, What exactly is Bluesky?
Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey developed Bluesky, a decentralized social app, at the same time as Twitter. It offers an experience similar to Twitter where users can post short messages of up to 300 characters, pictures, and videos, complete with familiar functions like liking, quoting, reposting, and commenting on posts.
However, it also functions quite differently from X by offering a unique, user-controlled experience, allowing custom feeds based on interests and relationships, which can be shared with others. In addition, it presents “starter packs,” which are carefully curated collections of recommended accounts for topics interests, or locations. This democratic, algorithm-free approach cultivates a friendly, community-focused platform culture.
Bluesky is an independent company that prioritizes user control and transparency in an effort to reinvent social networks. Bluesky uses the AT Protocol, an open-source framework that was developed internally. This means that people outside the company can see how it is built and what is being developed.
