Large tech companies are competing to use AI to its fullest. Leading the charge at the moment are Google, Microsoft, and Meta, who keep releasing new AI features. But Apple is the single company that hasn’t quite made the breakthrough. Luckily, that jump won’t be too far off. The Cupertino-based tech company is reportedly planning to add more generative AI technologies to its lineup. AI-related features for Macs, iPhones, and other services, such as Siri the voice assistant, will soon be available.
Apple has reportedly been working on its generative AI project for some time, according to a Bloomberg report. The report claimed that Apple was developing Ajax, an LLM, and launching Apple GPT, an internal chatbot. The company is now moving forward by giving Siri generative AI capabilities, which could go live as early as next year. Although Apple has so far employed generative AI in iOS to power an advanced auto-correct feature, iOS 18 is anticipated to bring further improvements to the iPhone. Apple is also exploring ways to integrate AI into its Xcode development app. Apple’s LLM is anticipated to work in line with other generative AI services available in the market from giants like Google and Microsoft, enhancing the ability of both Siri and the Messages app to handle queries and auto-complete sentences. Apple is also expected to use AI to power its Music app, enabling features like auto-generated playlists. AI improvements are also anticipated for Apple’s other first-party applications, including Pages and Keynote on Mac.
However, Apple continues to argue over how to implement generative AI. Providing an entirely on-device experience is one way to preserve user privacy. Using a cloud-based setup is an additional choice that would enable Apple to provide better AI experiences. Apple is also thinking about a hybrid strategy that would incorporate cloud-based AI with on-device AI.
