In January, OpenAI plans to introduce “Operator,” a new autonomous AI agent, according to Bloomberg. The AI agent is made to function autonomously, controlling computers and carrying out activities without human assistance. To give tech enthusiasts and developers an opportunity to test its capabilities, OpenAI will first make it available as a research preview and developer tool.

With this news, the stage is set for an exciting competition amongst the leading AI companies. By December, Google is anticipated to introduce its own AI agent, while companies such as Anthropic have already introduced “computer use” capabilities. Although it’s yet unknown when Operator will be available to users, its development represents a substantial change in the role of AI. This next generation of artificial intelligence is ready to engage directly with computer systems and carry out activities on its own, rather than only deciphering text and images.

The action taken by OpenAI reflects the growing enthusiasm in the AI community. Sam Altman, the CEO, recently hinted at autonomous agents being the next major advancement in artificial intelligence. He clarified at a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” forum that although models are becoming better, autonomous AI agents will be the true game-changer. OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil expressed his optimism as well, projecting that agent-based systems will become widely used in 2025.

Since incremental improvements might not be sufficient to raise pricing for users, AI labs are under pressure to generate revenue from their costly models. Autonomous agents are anticipated to be the next big thing — a ChatGPT-scale innovation that will justify the substantial investment in AI development.
