OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT and the company responsible for the global AI boom is reportedly gearing up to launch its own search engine.
A report from The Information is how the word first got out. A little digging revealed that the company has registered a new domain name, “search.chatgpt.com,” along with a security certificate, indicating an impending launch of the ChatGPT-powered search engine, according to a recent update on Y Combinator’s Hacker News community. But as of right now, accessing the URL results in the message “Not found.”
This might be nothing, but it also might indicate that OpenAI’s product which functions as an alternative to Google Search is about to become official in the coming days.
It is speculated that OpenAI’s search engine will combine ChatGPT’s AI capabilities with those of a web search engine like Google. As a result, users searching on the engine should anticipate seeing AI-generated content in addition to links to pertinent websites, as has been the case with previous releases of AI tools that can conduct internet searches and provide relevant results.
In order to generate additional income for the company, OpenAI is also expected to integrate advertisements into the search engine. Users can look to Microsoft’s Copilot, which is powered by GPT-4 and the Bing search engine to get an idea of how the new search engine might feel and look, even though the UI of the search engine may vary depending on the device.
With a monopoly over nearly 90% of the market, Google is presently one of the most significant players in the search engine industry. According to reports, Google is even thinking of charging users for premium features on its GenAI-powered search engine, which was introduced last year.
With the release of generative AI products Microsoft and OpenAI have drawn the attention of business leaders, including Google. The competition between the businesses that have been revealing the incorporation of AI-powered features in their products may get even more intense with OpenAI’s entry into the search engine market.
