After being announced earlier this year, the much-awaited ChatGPT search has finally been released!
OpenAI is adding real-time online search capabilities to ChatGPT, which will improve the AI chatbot’s functionality. Powered by a fine-tuned version of OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, this new feature enables ChatGPT to give up-to-date information with accurate source attribution while maintaining a conversational interface.
ChatGPT Search displays information and images from the web, including sports scores, news, and more. It also provides links to relevant sources and allows you to refine an ongoing search by asking follow-up questions.
“Now, chat can get you to a better answer: Ask a question in a more natural, conversational way, and ChatGPT can choose to respond with information from the web. Go deeper with follow-up questions, and ChatGPT will consider the full context of your chat to get a better answer for you,” reads OpenAI’s latest blog.
When you use ChatGPT, the bot will perform a web search based on your query. If you wish to override its decision-making, tap the new web search icon underneath the input field. According to OpenAI, the function tracks “original, high-quality content from the web” and incorporates it into conversational answers. This includes reputable news outlets and data providers such as AccuWeather.
A Sources button is displayed under each ChatGPT Search reply. Upon clicking, you will see a sidebar containing references and links.
ChatGPT Search will be available first to customers who have signed up for the “SearchGPT” waitlist, with Plus and Team users also getting access right away. The feature will be available to Enterprise and Edu members in the “next few weeks,” with further availability for all free users coming “over the coming months.” The feature will be available through ChatGPT’s web, mobile, and desktop apps.
