According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is likely developing the next version of its AirTag device, with intentions to launch the product in mid-2025. If confirmed, this would indicate a significant gap from the first AirTags launched in 2021.

Customers can monitor vital possessions like keys, wallets, documents, bags, and more with Apple’s AirTag device. When attached to a specific item and connected to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, it can even function as a personal tracker. AirTag will show up on the Items tab under the Find My App folder. This area contains additional tools to notify you and take action against unauthorized tracking.

As per the reports, Apple is working with Asian manufacturing partners to test its latest AirTag, which is presently codenamed B589. Even though the debut is still quite some way off, there are a few modifications that we can probably anticipate. Due to the integration of a new ultra-wideband (UWB) chip—similar to the ones found in the iPhone 15, Apple Watch Series 9, and Apple Watch Ultra 2—the upcoming AirTag is expected to provide improved location tracking capabilities.

It is anticipated that the new UWB chip will boost the range to an amazing 60 meters from the limited 10 meters of the U1 chip found in the first generation of AirTags. Additionally, a precision searching feature that would allow users to locate their friends more precisely might be made possible by this advancement. When Apple releases its new AirTag, Android and iOS users will find a very different Bluetooth tracking landscape.

Google unveiled its brand-new Find My Device network last month, enabling users to find their phones by utilizing signals from nearby Android devices. Even Life360, the company that owns Tile and provides safety services, is developing a satellite-based location-tracking network for its Bluetooth tags.

Apple eventually began allowing iPhones to display unwanted tracking alerts for third-party Bluetooth tags in last week’s iOS 17.5 update. An iPhone user will receive an alert and be able to locate it by playing a sound if an unknown AirTag or other third-party tracker is detected with them. The functionality was developed as part of an industry standard to stop stalking on Android and iPhone devices. Numerous manufacturers of Bluetooth trackers, such as Eufy, Pebblebee, and Chipolo, already announced their support for the new standard.
