Google has just rolled out an exciting new experimental AI tool designed to help users dive into new topics with ease. The new tool, “Learn About,” stands out from Google’s usual AI offerings, such as Gemini or AI Overviews. What makes “Learn About” different is its unique, interactive, and visually engaging approach to presenting information. Rather than just spitting out data, it pulls data from educational sources, making learning feel more like an experience. Built using the LearnLM large language model (LLM), this tool offers a fresh alternative to the typical Gemini-based models, promising a more educational and dynamic way to explore various subjects.

Google detailed the Learn About tool on its sign-up page, describing it as a “conversational learning companion.” The tech giant explained that this experimental tool is designed to assist users in achieving their learning goals. At the moment, this tool is available to a select group of users in the US, with no access to other regions for now. What sets this AI tool apart is the use of a unique AI model called LearnLM. Unveiled during the Google I/O event, LearnLM is designed to be more focused on educational and research-based data. Unlike other AI models, it’s tailored to align with how people learn, offering a more relevant and grounded learning experience.

Learn About offers a more engaging way to explore new topics, as it makes use of visual and interactive elements like images, articles, and videos. During testing, it was observed that when the same prompt was used with both Gemini and Learn About, the responses were noticeably different, highlighting the unique output generated by each tool.

For a specific prompt, Gemini reportedly pulled its response directly from Wikipedia. In contrast, Learn About displayed an image from an educational website, along with additional related content, allowing users to explore the topic and related concepts in greater depth. This AI tool is also said to minimize the common issue of hallucinations that often occur with other Google AI models.

Learn About provides interactive guides on complex subjects, allowing users to explore concepts step by step for a thorough understanding. Additionally, it points out common misconceptions related to the topic, helping users avoid misunderstandings and grasp the material more effectively. The tool features informative textbook-style boxes for users interested in delving deeper, with related topics displayed in the sidebar to enrich the learning experience. Given its unique focus on education and related searches, Google’s experimental AI tool does appear promising. This experiment could end up in a more visually stimulating educational experience. In addition, Google has updated the Gemini app with a new Utilities extension. Through the extension, Gemini AI assistant on Android devices will be able to manage smartphone operations. It can control first-party apps and functions like the camera, volume control, timer, alarm, and more.
