Is this the end of free Twitter? Elon Musk has hinted that he is considering charging a slight fee for commercial and government users. It is the latest hint of changes that the billionaire could introduce after he completes his takeover of the social media platform.
“Twitter will always be free for casual users, but maybe a slight cost for commercial/government users”, Musk’s tweet said. Twitter has not yet responded to Musk’s statement.
Musk has been suggesting a series of changes to the social media platform since last month. After closing the deal to buy Twitter, Musk said that he wants to enhance the platform with new features, make the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeat spam bots, and authenticate all humans.
The projected $1bn in interest costs that are attached to the funding had raised speculations that Musk will introduce charges on the platform to make the transaction financially profitable. The Wall Street Journal has also reported that Elon Musk might refloat Twitter on the stock market in a few years after he has taken over the company.
Even before reaching a deal with Twitter, Musk had suggested a few changes to the Twitter Blue premium subscription service, including reducing its price. Recently, at the annual Met Gala in New York, Musk also said that he would make Twitter transparent about how the tweets are promoted or demoted and wanted its software to be publicly available for critique.
