One of the most eagerly awaited drone launches has finally arrived. It’s two drones. The recently announced DJI Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine.

There are a few key differences between the two new drones, but let’s start with the one reserved for the $4,999 Mavic 3 Cine. The Cine model can record Apple ProRes 422 HQ footage at 5.1K up to 50FPS and contains a built-in, but non-removable, 1TB SSD.

The $2,199 Mavic 3 does not include ProRes or a built-in SSD, but it does have the same dual-camera system driven by a 4/3 CMOS sensor. Both drones can shoot 4K video at up to 120 frames per second and take 20MP photographs. In addition to the standard 24mm lens, a hybrid zoom lens with 28x digital zoom is included. In terms of focal length, that translates to 162mm at f/4.4.

Both drones feature batteries designed for 46 minutes of flight time, which is a major improvement over the Mavic 2’s 31-minute battery and even the Mavic Air 2s & 2S, which could fly for 34 and 31 minutes, respectively, on a single charge.

The two drones are the successors of DJI’s Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom, which were unveiled in 2018 and included the first Hasselblad camera to be used in DJI drones after the company purchased a controlling share in it in 2017. However, we haven’t seen any Hasselblad branding in DJI goods since 2018 – until now. And, just as in 2018, DJI has included the Hasselblad Natural Color Solution, which guarantees remarkably natural colors directly from the camera.

If you don’t want to use the built-in color profile, the Mavic 3 can record video in 10-bit D-log for additional color control in post-production. You can film in conventional H.264 and H.265 profiles in addition to ProRes, however, there is no HDR video on this drone.

Aside from the camera upgrades, DJI has also improved the Mavic 3’s autonomous functions. The Mavic 3 shares omnidirectional obstacle detection like its predecessor, but the sensors can now identify objects up to 200m (650 feet) away, up from 20m (65 feet).

However, the increased reach enables certain new enhancements, like Advanced RTH (return to home), APAS 5.0, and ActiveTrack 5.0. Advanced RTH assists the drone in planning a more intelligent route to return to the launching position. And the APAS 5.0 accomplishes just that, only while you’re in control of the drone. ActiveTrack 5.0, which will not be available at launch, promises significant improvements in tracking and following subjects. For example, the capacity to fly in any direction while following a subject and to use visual sensors on the camera body to continue monitoring subjects if they go out of frame.

Both drones also have upgraded versions of DJI’s proprietary transmission technology, OcuSync 3+, which boasts a range of 15km (under ideal conditions) and 1080p at 60fps live feed transmission to your smartphone or controller.

If you want to acquire this drone, you may do it in one of three packages. The regular version costs $2,199 and includes the drone, carrying strap, remote controller, charger, a pair of spare propellers, and a joystick.

The Fly More Combo includes two extra batteries, a charging hub, four sets of propellers, a carrying case that also doubles as a backpack, and a pair of ND filters (ND4, ND8, ND16, and ND32). The Fly More Combo is priced at $2,999.

The last package is the Cine Premium Combo, which means you can’t get the Cine version of the Mavic 3 without spending additional money on the accessories that come with it, including a fully new DJI RC Pro. It’s a remote controller with a brilliant built-in screen, comparable to the DJI Smart Controller. The Cine Premium combo also contains an extra set of ND filters (ND64, ND128, ND256, ND512) that the Fly More Combo does not. The Cine Premium Combo package will cost you $4,999. All three packages are now available for purchase.
