OpenAI has introduced a new “Canvas” interface for ChatGPT, offering users a collaborative, side-by-side experience to refine sections of text or code. The Canvas feature adds an editing window alongside the traditional ChatGPT chat, allowing users to tweak content or highlight sections for targeted revisions manually. This setup enhances interaction by enabling users to make direct changes or request more precise feedback and suggestions from ChatGPT, making the editing process smoother and more efficient.

OpenAI announced that the new Canvas feature enables ChatGPT to better comprehend the context of what users are trying to accomplish. They emphasized that enhancing the usefulness and accessibility of AI necessitates a reevaluation of user interaction methods. According to OpenAI, Canvas represents a novel approach and is the first significant update to ChatGPT’s visual interface since its launch two years ago.

Users can easily verify grammar and clarity, suggest inline modifications, and change the text’s length and reading level via the menu of shortcuts offered by ChatGPT’s Canvas. Additionally, there are several coding-specific shortcuts for adding logs and comments, debugging, and translating code into other languages. This idea is comparable to the “Artifacts” feature that competitor AI developer Anthropic released for Claude in August.

Before the introduction of Canvas, ChatGPT users often found themselves needing to enter new prompts multiple times to improve the responses generated by the chatbot. With Canvas, this process becomes much more efficient, granting users greater control over their interactions. The interface includes a back button that allows users to revert to earlier versions of their work. OpenAI also mentioned that they are fine-tuning the conditions under which Canvas activates automatically, aiming to reduce its activation for coding tasks to prevent interruptions for advanced users.

The Canvas interface is currently in its beta phase and can be accessed by choosing “GPT-4o with Canvas” from the model picker drop-down menu in ChatGPT. This feature is gradually being rolled out to users of ChatGPT Plus and Teams, with plans to extend access to Enterprise and Edu users next week. Once it exits beta, Canvas will be available to free users of ChatGPT and will automatically activate whenever the system identifies a situation where it could be beneficial, as stated by OpenAI.
