ASUS has been named Intel’s first partner for its Next Unit of Compute (NUC) tiny PC business. The two companies have reached a non-binding agreement under which ASUS will manufacture, distribute, and service Intel’s NUC devices from the 10th through the 13th generation. ASUS will also create future NUC models. ASUS might be creating future NUC tiny PCs, DIY kits for mini PCs, DIY kits for laptops, configurable boards, chassis, and other assembly pieces based on the company’s present portfolio.
Previously, Intel ceased its “direct investment” in its NUC business and would no longer develop first-party NUC devices. It did not elaborate on its reasons, but working with partners on a non-essential business frees up resources that may be used to focus on chip production. Intel earlier stated that its first-quarter profitability exceeded forecasts, although sales was still down 36% year on year when compared to the same period in 2022. In addition, the company stated that it remained cautious in the current environment.
Intel stated in its collaboration announcement that ASUS’ “expertise and track record of delivering industry-leading mini PCs to customers make it ideally suited to continue driving innovation and growth in NUC systems products.” ASUS will create a new business unit dubbed “ASUS NUC BU” to handle everything connected to Intel’s NUC. However, the manufacturer will acquire a non-exclusive license to Intel’s NUC devices, allowing the chipmaker to collaborate with other firms in the future.
