As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more central to business operations, Apple is introducing new tools that give enterprises greater control over AI integration. With its upcoming September software updates, Apple will allow businesses to configure the use of an enterprise version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, along with other external AI providers.
More Flexibility in AI Integration
Unlike a setup that locks enterprises into a single AI platform, Apple’s approach allows IT administrators to restrict or allow not just ChatGPT but any external AI system. This flexibility opens the door for Apple to partner with other AI providers in the future, without requiring major code-level changes.
Balancing AI Innovation with Data Privacy
Apple continues to promote its Private Cloud Compute architecture, which ensures security and privacy for sensitive data. However, recognizing that enterprises have varying needs, Apple is giving them the choice of processing data either in the cloud or on the device. Businesses can also decide whether employees’ AI queries should be routed to ChatGPT’s cloud service, even without a direct enterprise deal with OpenAI.
Enterprise Tools Beyond AI
The fall updates aren’t limited to AI. Apple is also introducing new enterprise-focused features, including:
- The Apple Business Manager API enables integration with IT tools, including MDM platforms, inventory systems, and help desks.
- Enhanced Device Management makes it easier to migrate devices during mergers and acquisitions.
- Return to Service Improvements enable devices to be wiped and reassigned quickly, while keeping apps installed to save time and bandwidth.
- Support for Vision Pro expanding Return to Service capabilities to Apple’s mixed-reality headset.
New User Access and Authentication Features
Apple is also focusing on improving user experience in shared device environments. Updates include:
- Guest Mode on Macs, allowing employees to log in using credentials from their identity provider, with data erased upon logout.
- NFC Reader Support allows employees to log in to Macs using a simple tap of their iPhone or Apple Watch.
The Enterprise AI Road Ahead
By offering granular control over AI tools and expanding enterprise services, Apple is signaling its commitment to helping businesses adopt AI responsibly. The combination of flexibility, security, and user-friendly management tools positions Apple as a stronger player in the enterprise technology space.
