It goes without saying that AI development entails several security vulnerabilities. While regulatory agencies attempt to develop legislation, it is mostly up to businesses to take safeguards for the time being. The founding of the Frontier Model Forum, an industry-led entity focusing on safe, deliberate AI development, by Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and Open AI is the latest example of self-regulation. Frontier models are defined as any “large-scale machine-learning models” that go beyond present capabilities and have a broad variety of skills.
The Forum intends to form an advisory group, create a charter, and secure funding. Its primary pillars will include promoting AI safety research, defining best practices, working collaboratively with politicians, academic circles, civic society, and businesses, and supporting efforts to construct AI that “can help meet society’s greatest challenges.”
Over the following year, members will allegedly concentrate on the first three objectives. In terms of membership, the announcement defines the requirements, such as generating frontier models and demonstrating a clear commitment to making them safe. “It is vital that AI companies–especially those working on the most powerful models–align on common ground and advance thoughtful and adaptable safety practices to ensure powerful AI tools have the broadest benefit possible,” said Anna Makanju, OpenAI’s vice president of global affairs, in a statement. “This is urgent work and this forum is well-positioned to act quickly to advance the state of AI safety.”
The formation of the Forum follows a recent safety agreement between the White House and major AI businesses, including those behind this new effort. External experts will conduct checks for improper behavior, and content generated by AI will include a watermark.
