A new WhatsApp feature will allow you to mask your IP address from anybody you call using the service. Knowing someone’s IP address may expose a lot of personal information about them, such as their location and internet service provider, thus being able to disguise it is a huge privacy gain. “This new feature provides an additional layer of privacy and security geared towards our most privacy-conscious users,” WhatsApp explained in a blog post.
Depending on network constraints, WhatsApp now relays calls either through its own servers or by creating a direct connection known as peer-to-peer with whoever you are contacting. Peer-to-peer conversations frequently give higher speech quality, but both devices must know each other’s IP addresses.
When you use the new option, simply known as “Protect IP address in calls,” WhatsApp will always relay your calls through its own servers rather than creating a peer-to-peer connection, even if it entails a tiny drop in sound quality. According to the company, all calls will remain end-to-end encrypted even if they pass via WhatsApp’s servers.
