WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that lets users generate personalized chat wallpapers using artificial intelligence (AI). With the latest version of WhatsApp for iOS, users can now create unique chat backgrounds by entering text prompts. They can also refine or modify these wallpapers before applying them to their chats. This AI-powered functionality, supported by Meta AI, is gradually being rolled out to users and is currently available to beta testers on WhatsApp for Android as well.
The option to design custom wallpapers can be accessed through the chat theme settings. After updating to version 25.19.75 on iOS via the App Store, users will find a new “Create with AI” feature by navigating to Settings, then Chats, followed by Default chat theme, and finally selecting Chat theme. This update was initially spotted by the feature tracking platform WABetaInfo and is currently being released in phases to users on the stable channel.
When the feature becomes available on iOS or Android, selecting “Create with AI” will open a pop-up card containing a text field where users can type in a prompt for the image generator. Within a few seconds, Meta AI will display several AI-generated wallpapers. Users can swipe through the preview images to choose their favorite design.
There is also a “Make changes” option that allows users to regenerate the wallpaper based on the same prompt. Once a wallpaper is selected, WhatsApp gives users the ability to reposition the image and adjust brightness using a slider, especially when dark mode is on. The wallpaper can then be applied by tapping the “Set” button.
In addition, WhatsApp is working on a new feature aimed at improving how message replies are displayed. This upcoming feature will organize replies into structured threads, offering a clearer view of conversations. Although it is still under development, it is expected to be released to beta users on both iOS and Android. Similar threaded reply features are already available on platforms like iMessage and could soon become part of the WhatsApp experience.
