Meta has started rolling out a new feature on WhatsApp that lets users generate AI-powered summaries of their unread messages. Available first in the U.S. and in English, the tool is designed to help users catch up on long conversations without scrolling through each message individually.
Dubbed “Message Summaries,” the feature appears as a banner at the top of chat threads with a large volume of unread texts. Tapping it generates a concise, bullet-pointed summary of key points such as decisions made, questions asked, schedules shared, and action items mentioned. It works for both individual and group chats.
Meta says the feature uses its in-house Meta AI models but processes the data in a secure cloud environment called “Private Processing.” According to WhatsApp, the content of the chat and the summary remain visible only to the user who requests it. Neither WhatsApp nor Meta can view the messages, and other chat participants won’t be notified that a summary was generated.
The feature is off by default and must be manually enabled through settings. Users can also exclude specific conversations from being summarized by using WhatsApp’s new “Advanced Chat Privacy” controls.
Meta says this feature aims to reduce information overload and help people stay on top of fast-moving chats, especially after meetings, travel, or long periods away from their phones. It builds on WhatsApp’s recent AI integrations like message generation, image creation, and translation.
While early adopters have found it useful, others have raised concerns about AI reliability and the growing use of machine-generated content inside private messaging apps.
The feature is expected to expand to more regions and languages in the coming months, though Meta hasn’t provided a specific timeline for the global rollout.
