Amazon has expanded its healthcare AI assistant to a much wider audience. As of March 2026, Amazon Health AI is now accessible directly through Amazon’s website and mobile app, allowing users to ask health-related questions and manage basic healthcare tasks.
Previously, the tool was only available inside the One Medical app, which Amazon acquired for $3.9 billion in 2023. With this latest rollout, Amazon is making AI-powered health assistance available to any U.S. customer, even without a Prime subscription.
What Amazon Health AI Can Do
Amazon Health AI works as a virtual assistant designed to help users understand health information and access care more easily.
Key capabilities include:
• Answering general health questions about symptoms, medications, and conditions
• Explaining lab results and medical records in simple language
• Renewing prescriptions through Amazon Pharmacy
• Booking appointments with One Medical doctors
• Connecting users to healthcare professionals when needed
The system is powered by AI tools running on Amazon Web Services, which allows the assistant to process requests and coordinate healthcare services.
Who Can Use Amazon Health AI
Amazon has introduced different access levels for the assistant.
Free access for all users
Anyone in the U.S. can ask general health questions without sharing personal medical data.
Enhanced features for Prime members
Users who connect their health records through the Health Information Exchange can receive personalized explanations for test results and diagnoses.
Prime members can also send direct messages to licensed doctors for common health issues.
Privacy and Data Protection
Because healthcare information is sensitive, Amazon says Health AI operates under strict privacy standards. The system follows Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act regulations to protect patient data.
According to Amazon, health information from One Medical or Amazon Pharmacy is not used for advertising or sold to third parties. However, anonymized usage patterns may be analyzed to improve the AI system.
Competition in the AI Healthcare Market
Amazon’s move places it alongside other major AI companies exploring healthcare tools.
For example, both OpenAI and Anthropic have introduced AI assistants capable of answering medical questions and analyzing health records.
However, Amazon has a unique advantage. It already operates healthcare services, a pharmacy network, and a large cloud infrastructure. By combining these services, Amazon can offer a more integrated healthcare experience than many software-only AI platforms.
Why This Matters
The launch of Amazon Health AI highlights a growing trend: AI tools are becoming part of everyday healthcare access. Instead of navigating multiple apps and providers, users can now ask questions, manage prescriptions, and book appointments from one platform.
While AI assistants cannot replace professional medical advice, they can make healthcare information easier to understand and more accessible to millions of people.
With healthcare in the United States valued at nearly $5 trillion, Amazon’s expansion into AI-powered medical services signals a major shift in how technology companies are entering the healthcare industry.
