For years, Google Search has been the go-to gateway to the internet. That may be about to change. Recent comments from Google’s product leaders suggest that AI Mode, the company’s AI-powered search tool, could soon replace the traditional search page as the default experience.

The hint came when the lead product manager for Google AI Studio responded to a user asking about AI Mode as the default. His short reply: “Soon.”

What is AI Mode?

AI Mode is Google’s latest effort to combine conversational AI with search. Instead of returning a list of blue links, it delivers real-time AI-generated answers. Launched over the summer, it has already gained significant traction. Google revealed that AI Mode had over 100 million monthly active users in the U.S. and India, and the rollout has since expanded to more than 180 countries.

The tool builds on Google’s AI Overviews, the summaries already appearing at the top of many results pages. AI Mode takes it a step further, merging chatbot-like conversations with search capabilities.

Why it Matters

The shift to AI-first search could transform the internet as we know it. Traditional Google Search has long driven billions of daily visits to websites, forming the backbone of online publishing. But with AI Mode, users often get their answers directly, without needing to click through.

Publishers are already feeling the impact. The New York Times, among others, has reported sharp drops in traffic from search. The Columbia Journalism Review called it a “traffic apocalypse,” while The Wall Street Journal described it as “AI armageddon.” The Economist was even more blunt, stating that “AI is killing the web.”

If AI Mode becomes the default, these problems may intensify. Websites that depend on organic traffic for survival could struggle to stay afloat.

Google Sends Mixed Signals

Despite the “soon” comment, not everyone at Google is confirming the change. Google’s VP of Product for Search urged caution, saying the company is only focused on making AI Mode accessible for those who want it.

Still, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has made it clear that the old model of “10 blue links” is outdated. He has described AI Mode as “a total reimagining” of search, signalling the company’s long-term commitment to this direction.

The Risks of AI Search

While AI Mode is innovative, it is far from perfect. Mashable’s recent testing of AI Overviews found frequent factual errors and “hallucinations,” where the AI confidently delivered incorrect answers. In some cases, AI Mode answered correctly while AI Overviews failed, but both tools raise concerns about accuracy and reliability.

These flaws raise serious questions: Can AI Mode really take over the responsibility of guiding billions of users through the web? And what happens to online knowledge ecosystems if people stop clicking through to publishers that provide the original information?

A Turning Point for the Web

Whether AI Mode becomes the default search option tomorrow or years from now, one thing is certain: Google’s future is tied to AI. If and when this change arrives, it will not just alter how we search but could reshape the entire structure of the internet economy.

For users, it might mean faster answers. For publishers, it could mean a fight for survival. For Google, it represents a gamble to stay ahead in the AI race.

The internet may never be the same.
