Google has introduced a new experimental feature called Web Guide, designed to enhance how search results are organized. Available through Search Labs, Web Guide uses Google’s Gemini AI to group results into relevant categories, making it easier to explore complex or open-ended queries.
This feature aims to improve the search experience by moving beyond the traditional “10 blue links.” Instead, it organizes results under AI-generated headings that represent different aspects of the query. For example, searching for “how to care for a mango tree” may display grouped sections like “Comprehensive Mango Tree Care Guides,” “Care in Specific Climates,” and “Troubleshooting Issues.”
How It Works
Web Guide uses the query fan-out technique, similar to AI Mode, allowing Gemini to break down a search query into subtopics. It begins by showing two top relevant links, followed by grouped content and AI-generated summaries. These results can include content from educational sites, Reddit, YouTube, Quora, and more.
The feature is especially helpful for broader queries like “how to solo travel in Japan” or “ways to stay connected with family across time zones.” Each section focuses on a unique angle, such as safety tips, tools, or personal experiences, making it easier for users to find what truly matters to them.
Why It Matters
Unlike AI Overviews that often dominate the page, Web Guide maintains a cleaner layout, bringing back more traditional elements of search. The AI-generated categories help users scan topics faster, while still giving them the option to explore quality links directly.
For now, Web Guide is available to users who opt in via Search Labs. It currently appears in the “Web” tab of Google Search and can be disabled from that tab without turning off the entire experiment. Google plans to expand the feature to the “All” tab in the future.
Web Guide represents a thoughtful step toward smarter, more intuitive search. By combining AI assistance with user control, Google is offering a more organized and efficient way to navigate the web, especially when simple answers aren’t enough.
