The Federal Communications Commission has a new permanent chairperson. The Senate confirmed President Biden’s nomination of Jessica Rosenworcel by a vote of 68 to 31, transforming her acting chair post into an official (and extra) five-year tenure. Her temporary job was set to end in a few weeks.
No surprise, Rosenworcel said that she intends to stick to her current policy of making communications available to “everyone, everywhere.” The chairperson has been a supporter of net neutrality and other measures aimed at reining in giant technology corporations, in direct contrast to former chair Ajit Pai’s anti-regulation position.
The measure adds to the FCC’s stability. Unfortunately, this might not be the most crucial nomination. The White House is still waiting for Gigi Sohn’s confirmation to fill an open commissioner position. If she is confirmed, the FCC will have a 3-2 Democratic majority, which is more likely to favor Biden’s telecom agenda. Rosenworcel may have to moderate her expectations if the Commission stays divided.
