Google will integrate a Gemini side panel into Gmail web, which can help users draft new emails and summarize existing ones. In addition to providing “proactive prompts,” Google notes in a blog post that the tool is “built to leverage Google’s most capable models,” including Gemini 1.5 Pro.

“Starting today, you can also use Gemini in the Gmail mobile app on Android and iOS to analyze email threads and see a summarised view with the key highlights, just as you can with the side panel on the web,” reads the company’s blog.

Google will also let Gemini summarize threads in the Gmail mobile apps. Users may also find it easier to manage their mobile emails with features like Gmail Q&A and Contextual Smart Reply. In addition to helping users with viewing, understanding and responding to email content, the Gemini side panel is also available for other Workspace apps such as Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Both these features were confirmed to be on the way at this year’s I/O event.

Users who want to access Gemini in the Workspace apps’ side panel must have personalization and smart features enabled. On the web version, users can click the “Ask Gemini” (star button) in the upper right corner of Gmail to access Gemini in the side panel. Gemini can also be accessed by tapping “summarise this email” in an email thread on Android and iPhone devices.

Rollout for the Rapid Release domain will begin on June 24 and take up to three days to complete, while the rollout for those on Standard Release will begin on July 8 and take up to 15 days to finish.

The features won’t be accessible to you if you are a free Gmail user or if you have a Google One Premium subscription, as they are only available to users of Google One AI Premium, Gemini Business or Enterprise add-on, or Gemini Education or Education Premium add-on.
